Facilitator - Tokyo
Helen Iwata has worked in Japan for over two decades as a translator, interpreter, communication-skills trainer, coach, and manager. She developed a deep understanding of Japanese business culture during her seven years with Nippon Steel Trading before joining the Japan office of McKinsey & Company, the management consultancy, where she worked for ten years with colleagues from around the globe. During this period, she facilitated workshops and provided one-on-one coaching for the company’s consultants as well as for Japanese and multinational clients on a range of communication-related topics. In May 2013, she established Sasuga! Communications to focus on her passions: 1) helping people build their confidence and capability in communication-related skills and 2) translating.
Helen is from England. She studied German and Japanese at Aston University and holds a Master of Arts in Advanced Japanese Studies from Sheffield University. She studied conference interpreting at Interschool in Tokyo.
From 2009 to 2013, Helen served as president of the Japan Association of Translators and she is currently secretary general of the Itosu-ryu Karatedo International Federation. Helen holds a fourth-degree black belt in Itosu-ryu karate and also practices Kongo-ryu Ryukyu kobudo.
