Paul Jaffe is an intercultural consultant and trainer, specializing in strategic communication and cultural adaptation, and is a cross-cultural Business Expert for Japan. He offers intercultural business consulting, trainings and lectures for culturally diverse companies. He also offers business coaching for Japanese executives and managers, as well as executives and managers doing business with Japan. This enables his clients to capitalize on his deep knowledge of and long experience in Japan, as well as his experience in the financial industry in the US, where he worked as Pensions Manager for the Hawaii Pacific Headquarters of MONY Financial Services.
Paul is known for his ability to help people understand each other and build relationships across cultural and linguistic boundaries. He also has expertise in training non-native speakers to communicate more effectively in English, incorporating both specialized linguistic knowledge and intercultural psychology.
Paul formerly taught Intercultural Communication as well as classes in language, culture and Buddhism at Ryukoku University in Kyoto. He began working as a trainer in 1988 and has trained professionals, corporate executives and employees, government employees and educators at major corporations including Sony, Ricoh and NEC, as well as the Japan Intercultural Academy of Municipalities, the Japan Institute of Management Science, and The Sanno Institute of Management. He lived in Japan for a total of 25 years before returning to the United States in 2012 and speaks excellent Japanese.
Training areas have included pre-departure training, intercultural business management and international negotiation. Since Joining JIC as the New York Representative in early 2014, he has facilitated a broad range of seminars for large and small companies across a wide spectrum of industries, including automotive, biotech, chemical, energy, education, financial, food, legal, manufacturing, medical, mining, pharmaceutical, and technology.
Besides coaching and training, Paul has given numerous public talks and seminars on various aspects of culture and communication, and has taught public speaking and business writing, and frequently leads sessions on mindfulness meditation. He is the author of numerous articles on Japan and intercultural communication and was a co-founder of Kansai branch of the Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research (SIETAR).
As a coach, Paul has helped many managers, from mid-level to C-suite executives skillfully navigate the waters of intercultural business differences so that they could meet the demands of their positions and further their careers. He has worked with numerous Fortune 500 and Global 500 companies.
Paul has also trained extensively in Buddhist philosophy and practice and has been teaching meditation since 1980.
