This coaching is appropriate both for beginners in English wishing to gain more confidence, and for advanced speakers who wish to refine and polish their English communication skills.

Linguistic Coaching
Our Linguistic Coaching is based on analysis of the participant’s needs and is tailored to pinpoint the areas that can be leveraged for rapid and significant improvement. Communication techniques are taught that are not covered in typical English training. Participants in our Linguistic Coaching report that they are now better understood by non-Japanese colleagues, leading to increased communication effectiveness. Many participants also report improvement in their listening comprehension.
Our Linguistic Coaching instructor, Paul Jaffe, is a specialist trained in comparative phonetics. He has developed unique skills and instructional methodologies for training Japanese speakers in proper production of English over a period of 30 years of helping Japanese businesspeople, professionals, and educators to communicate more effectively.
Linguistic Coaching is typically done in sets of 10 sessions either for individuals or groups. Each session can last 1 hour, 1.5 hours, or 2 hours, depending on the number of participants and other conditions. Sessions can be conducted in person in the New York area, or online elsewhere via Skype or Zoom for individuals or very small groups.
Contents will be tailored to the participant, but typically will include:
- Overview of the sound system of the English language.
- Coaching on the pronunciation of sounds and sound groups that interfere with being easily understood.
- Understanding and practicing the characteristics of stress in English, to create a more natural-sounding speech.
- Learning to recognize and approximate more closely the natural rhythms of native English, which differ radically from Japanese. This will help the participant’s English sound friendlier, and be easier to understand.
Collectively these factors can make a big difference how well one is understood in English, as well as in improving the rapport between speaker and listener. With time and attention to these factors, the participant will also be able to hear and understand the sounds of English better.
